Created for the Galerie House of Art & Design in Sag Harbor, this kitchen serves as an upscale modernist retreat that reimagines the traditional Hamptons aesthetic. Designed by Head of Design Bob Bakes in collaboration with Design Chair Nicole Fuller, the space was conceived to "Live Artfully," blending mid-century influences with contemporary precision. The palette is defined by Bakes & Kropp’s custom color capabilities, featuring Meridian Collection cabinetry hand-painted in a vibrant St. Claire Blue—a bold, high-energy choice intended to harmonize with the home’s extensive art collection.
The kitchen’s architectural center of gravity is a massive 174-inch island, meticulously crafted from walnut in two contrasting finishes and anchored by an inset stone countertop. This expansive element creates a powerful material dialogue with the surrounding cabinetry, while a full-height quartz slab backsplash provides a seamless, monochromatic backdrop. To ensure the daring blue cabinetry felt integrated rather than isolated, the design employs a strategy of color repetition, drawing the hue through various accessories and textures to establish a sense of intentional flow and visual balance.
Refined details ground the kitchen’s contemporary spirit, including mid-century Thomas O’Brien lighting and signature brass hardware that adds a layer of warmth to the cool-toned cabinetry. Every element, from the sculptural island to the tailored metallic accents, was selected to support a multi-functional layout capable of hosting large-scale gatherings. The final composition is a testament to the versatility of Bakes & Kropp craftsmanship, resulting in a space that is both a functional culinary environment and a sophisticated piece of interior artistry.
